How Long Do Men Last?

Not 30 minutes. In the only large study that used a stopwatch, the typical man lasted about 5 minutes. Enter your time and see where you stand.

Median time to ejaculation

5.4 min

500 couples in five countries timed sex with a stopwatch for four weeks. Half of the men lasted between about 3 and 9 minutes.

Younger men last longer, not shorter. That runs against the common belief that men gain control with age.

Why it feels shorter than it is

  • Porn is edited and shows performers chosen for stamina. It is not a benchmark.
  • A guess is only a rough estimate. If you are unsure, time it once; the study used real stopwatches.
  • In surveys, far more men say they finish too early than meet the medical definition. Often the issue is the expectation, not the time.

Honest limits

  • The study covered men in stable relationships in the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Turkey and the US. Turkey had a shorter median (3.7 minutes) than the other four countries.
  • Couples timed themselves. Holding a stopwatch may change sex a little.
  • The study published the median, the range and the lowest percentiles. We fitted a log-normal curve to these points, which is how this kind of data is usually shaped. Percentiles in the middle are estimates.
  • The 31–50 group uses the overall median, as the study gives no separate figure for it.
  • Condom use and circumcision made no significant difference to the times.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the average man last in bed?

About 5.4 minutes from penetration to ejaculation (median). That comes from 500 couples in five countries who timed sex with a stopwatch for four weeks (Waldinger et al. 2005).

Is 2 minutes normal?

It is shorter than most, but not unusual: about 8% of men in the stopwatch study had a typical time under 2 minutes. It is outside the medical definition of premature ejaculation, which is about 1 minute or less.

How many men last longer than 10 minutes?

About 20% of men, based on the stopwatch data. Lasting 20 minutes or more as a typical time is rare, about 3%.

Do men last longer as they get older?

No, the opposite. In the stopwatch study the median was 6.5 minutes for men aged 18 to 30 and 4.3 minutes for men over 51.

How long should sex last?

Sex therapists surveyed in 2008 called 3 to 7 minutes of intercourse adequate and 7 to 13 minutes desirable. They rated 1 to 2 minutes as too short and 13 to 30 minutes as too long.

Do condoms make men last longer?

Not in the stopwatch study: condom use made no difference to the median time in any of the five countries. Circumcision made no significant difference either.
