Average Penis Girth: What's Normal and Why It Matters
The average erect girth is 11.7 cm (4.6 in), based on 15,521 measured men. See the full girth chart, how to measure it, and why it matters for condom fit.
Quick answers
- · Average erect girth: 11.7 cm (4.6 in)
- · Average flaccid girth: 9.3 cm (3.7 in)
- · About 1 in 6 men has 5 inches (12.7 cm) of girth or more
- · Girth, not length, decides condom size
What girth means (and what it doesn't)
Girth is circumference, the distance around the shaft — not the width seen from the front. The diameter is the girth divided by about 3.14, so an average girth of 11.7 cm equals a diameter of roughly 3.7 cm. Many men confuse the two and badly misjudge their size. Two thirds of men fall between 10.6 and 12.8 cm (4.2 to 5.0 inches), based on the largest review of researcher-measured men (Veale et al. 2015, n = 15,521).

How to measure girth correctly
- Measure when fully erect.
- Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string you then lay against a ruler.
- Wrap it once around the middle of the shaft, snug but without squeezing.
- Read the value where the tape overlaps. Measure three times on different days and use the average.

Girth and condom fit
Condom size is driven by girth. A condom that's too tight can reduce sensation and even soften an erection, while one that's too loose is more likely to slip. Standard condoms are designed for average girth, so men well above or below it often benefit from a different size.
Does girth matter to partners?
In a controlled study where women chose from 3D-printed models, the preferred erect girth for a long-term partner was about 12.2 cm (4.8 in), and 12.7 cm (5.0 in) for a one-time partner (Prause et al. 2015). Both are only slightly above average. Most preferences cluster close to the middle of the curve — details in does size matter to partners?
Can you increase girth?
No pill, cream or exercise increases girth. The only method with solid clinical evidence is hyaluronic acid fillers, which add girth temporarily (they're absorbed over 12 to 18 months) and carry real complication risks. Our evidence-graded guide compares every option.
Frequently asked questions
Is 5 inch girth good?
5 inches (12.7 cm) of erect girth is thicker than about 83% of men. It's clearly above average.
What is a normal penis girth?
Anything between about 10.6 and 12.8 cm (4.2 to 5.0 in) erect is within the range of two thirds of all men.
Is 12 cm girth good?
12 cm (4.7 in) is thicker than about 62% of men, slightly above the 11.7 cm average.
Is girth or length more important?
Partner preference studies show preferences for both cluster close to average. For condom fit, girth is what matters.
How do I convert girth to diameter?
Divide girth by 3.14. For example, 12 cm of girth equals about 3.8 cm in diameter.
