Condom Size Chart: Find the Width That Fits Your Girth

Condom size depends on girth, not length. A chart from snug to XXL with nominal widths in mm, the girth each one fits, and example brands for every size.

Most men buy whatever condom is on the shelf, and most condoms are built around one standard size. But fit depends on girth, the distance around the shaft, and men vary a lot there. Too loose and a condom can slip off. Too tight and it's uncomfortable, can dull sensation and is more likely to break. This chart shows which width fits which girth, and how many men fall into each size.

Quick answers

  • · Condoms are sized by nominal width: the flat width in mm printed on the box
  • · Girth decides the fit, length almost never matters
  • · Standard condoms are about 52 to 54 mm wide
  • · Only about 1 in 3 men falls in the regular band. Roughly as many would fit better with a slimmer condom, and about 3 in 10 with a larger one

How condom sizes work

A condom laid flat has a width, called the nominal width. Double it and you get the condom's circumference. A good fit is slightly snugger than your girth, so the condom stays put without squeezing. As a rule of thumb, the ideal nominal width is a bit under half your erect girth: about 87.5% of half the girth.

Example: an erect girth of 12 cm (4.7 in) gives an ideal nominal width of about 53 mm, a regular condom.

The shares come from the distribution of erect girth in 15,521 measured men (Veale et al. 2015, average 11.7 cm). Size classes are not standardised, so one brand's "large" can be another brand's "regular". Always check the width in mm on the box.

Signs your condom doesn't fit

Too loose: it slides down during sex, wrinkles at the base, or comes off when you pull out.

Too tight: it's hard to roll on, leaves a red ring at the base, feels like it's squeezing, or you lose your erection while wearing it.

Both are worth fixing. Poor fit is one of the most common reasons for condoms slipping or breaking.

Does length matter?

Rarely. Standard condoms are about 18 to 19 cm long when unrolled, and the average erect length is 13.1 cm (5.2 in). It's completely normal for part of the condom to stay rolled up at the base. Only men well above average length, roughly 18 cm (7 in) and more, need to look for longer condoms.

Tips for a better fit

  • Measure your girth around the middle of the shaft when fully erect, and use the average of a few measurements.
  • Buy a small pack of two or three sizes and compare. Many brands sell sampler packs.
  • Leave a little space at the tip and roll it all the way down.
  • If you're between two sizes, the smaller one is usually safer against slipping, as long as it's comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

What size condom do I need?

It depends on your erect girth. Under about 11.3 cm (4.5 in), a snug or slim-fit condom usually fits best. Between 11.3 and 12.2 cm (4.5 to 4.8 in), a regular condom. Above that, a large or XL condom.

What is the average condom size?

Most standard condoms have a nominal width of about 52 to 54 mm and a length of about 18 to 19 cm.

Are Magnums bigger than regular condoms?

Yes, slightly. Trojan Magnum is about 54 to 55 mm wide at the base and wider in the middle, compared with about 52 to 53 mm for a typical regular condom.

Can a condom be too big?

Yes. A condom that's too wide is more likely to slip off. If your girth is below average, a snug or slim-fit condom is the safer choice.

Does condom size depend on length or girth?

Girth. Almost all condoms are long enough for most men, but width varies, and that's what decides whether it slips or squeezes.
