Grower or Shower? The Data on Flaccid vs Erect Size

In the Veale et al. 2015 systematic review (n = 15,521), flaccid length has a mean of 9.16 cm with an SD of 1.57 cm, while erect length centers at 13.12 cm with an SD of 1.66 cm. Relative to the mean, flaccid size spreads noticeably wider — the average man grows about 1.43× (≈ 4.0 cm) between the two states.

The practical consequence: flaccid comparison carries almost no information about erect size. A smaller flaccid value is mostly a larger growth multiplier, not a smaller outcome.

Urology literature commonly draws the grower/shower line at roughly a 4 cm gain from flaccid to erect: at or above it you are a grower, below it a shower. It is a descriptive convention, not a diagnosis — and flaccid length itself swings with temperature, stress and arousal by more than a centimeter, so a single flaccid reading is a rough input at best.
